DESERT SWING DANCE CLUB

Founded May 5, 1990

A group of 18 people (headed by PAT DELFANTE) got together to organize the Desert Swing Dance
Club.Several of these people belonged to other swing dance clubs in other areas before moving to the
desert. Although there were many places to dance in the desert, there was no place to meet other swing
dancers, said Pat Delfante. So they voted to organize the DSDC. The first dance was held on May 18,1990
at the Nonchalance 74-360 Hwy. 111, in Palm Desert.
Swing dancing began in the big band era & has many names, depending on where you were from. In
NewYork its called the Lyndy,or East Coast Swlng. In St. Louis it's the Imperial. The Carolinas call it Shag.
Texas dancers call it either the Whip or Push. Most people in the west call their version the West Coast Swing
which is now California's state dance. No matter what the name, the dance is a spin off of the Jitterbug. It's
very easy to adapt to the different styles, no matter where you come from "said Delfante".
